Strategy deals with profoundly complex matters. The scanning of the moving environment is challenging. The understanding of the competitorsโ€™ moves, the change of customerโ€™s behaviours and the on-going industry and economy changes requires brain teaser solving skills. Foreseeing the future and identifying trends and signals that might (or not) impact the organisation is another complex and uncertain exercise. Conceptualising the possible solutions to tackle strategic issues and to take advantage of rising opportunities is even more sophisticated. Transforming the plan into reality is even harder.


However, even if the strategy content is inherently complex and sophisticated, ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜† ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ณ๐˜†. Strategists must synthesise a complex situation into crystal clear ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—บ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€. They must reduce the strategic direction to a handful of strategic ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€. They must convert multiple pieces of solutions into a simple and powerful ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ต to tackle the problem(s) faced. They must build a transformation plan so limpid that everybody will ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜†-๐—ถ๐—ป and contribute to it.


Simplification is not easy. It is ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฎ ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜. However this task, often forgotten or undervalued when it comes to strategy, is absolutely critical to offer clarity of analysis, clarity of options to take, and clarity of ways forward.
